Horley, St Bartholomew

Just two members from Horley served. Both returned, though Ernest Stephen Lanaway was, according to the original roll, wounded in the course of the war. The only likely medal index card does show two transfers between regiments, which possibly provides some corroboration for that. F Sadler is still a bit of a mystery, F probably stands for Frank, but there were three of them living in the Horley area in 1911, and there are far too many medal index cards to choose a likely candidate.

  • Private Ernest Stephen Lanaway — 5th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers; Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment; Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment; Wounded.
  • Sapper ?Frank? Sadler — Royal Engineers. [Forename not confirmed]
