Life events

Date Modifier Date Event Description/Notes Sources
Before 19 December 1897 Parents’ marriage Ernest Godin (25) and Edith Lucy Tullett (22) were married at St Peter’s, Croydon on 19 December 1897. The marriage was registered 4th quarter 1876, Brighton Registration District, Sussex. Ernest was an upholsterer and living at 14 Duppas Hill Lane, Edith Lucy at 22 Duppas Hill Lane. The fathers of both had already died: Ernest’s father, Stephen Walter Godin had also been an upholsterer; William Tullett a railway porter. FreeBMD1; FreeBMD2; SurreyParish1
Before 24 December 1899 Birth Stephen Walter Godin (presumably named after his grandfather), registered 4th quarter 1899, Croydon Registration District. He was baptised on 24 December 1899 at St Peter’s, Croydon, unfortunately the register does not note the actual date of birth. FreeBMD3; SurreyParish2
On 31 March 1901 Census Stephen W Godin aged 1, residing with his family at74a Frith Road, Croydon. Ernest is now aged 28 and an upholsterer’s assistant, Edith Lucy is 25. Census1901
Before 30 December 1903 Birth of brother Frederick Ernest Godin, registered 4th quarter 1903, Croydon Registration District. Unfortunately baptismal records for St Peter’s Croydon are not yet online for this period. FreeBMD4
Before 30 September 1903 Birth of sister Edith May Godin, registered 3rd quarter 1907, Croydon Registration District. Unfortunately baptismal records for St Peter’s Croydon are not yet online for this period. FreeBMD5
On 2 April 1911 Census Stephen Walter, aged 11, living at 30 Frith Road, Croydon, Surrey. Also residing there were his parents Ernest (38), upholsterer, and Edith Lucy (35), married 13 years, 3 children all living; and brother Frederick Ernest (7) and sister Edith May (3). Census1911
On 1 April 1917 First Quarter Peal On Palm Sunday, 1 April 1917, Stephen rang the tenor behind to a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples at Beddington. This was his first quarter peal. The footnote states, “The tenor ringer is one of Beddington’s youngsters, and this was his first quarter peal.” RW1
On 15 July 1917 Quarter Peal On 15 July 1917, A S Godin rang the tenor behind to a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples at Beddington. I seems likely that this was actually Stephen Godin, as none of his family had the initials A S. RW6
On 7 August 1917 Quarter Peal On 7 August 1917, Stephen rang the tenor behind to a quarter peal of Grandsire Caters at Beddington. RW5
After 7 August 1917 Enlistment Some time after that quarter peal he would have been called up (he would turn 18 towards the end of the year). No medal card has been found for him, nor entry in the Surrey Recruitment Registers, nor service record. The lack of medal card would suggest that he did not serve overseas before the Armistice. The roll lists him as Lance Corporal, King’s Royal Rifle Corps
On 24 June 1926 Peal Stephen Godin is reported to have rung his first peal on 2 October 1920, and was elected to the Surrey Association prior to the start of the attempt. He rang the tenor to a peal of Grandsire Caters, Thomas Talbot rang the fifth and Reginald Brough the treble. RW2
On 4 October 1924 Quarter peal Stephen Godin rang a second quarter peal on 4 October 1924, the method was Grandsire Triples, and he was again ringing the tenor. RW3
On 24 June 1926 Death Stephen Walter Godin died on 24 June 1926. The death was registered in the Croydon Registration District in 2nd quarter 1926. On 29 June a half-muffled peal of Grandsire Triples was rung in his memory, following his burial the day before. A footnote to the peal describes him as a member of the Beddington society. All eight ringers in the peal were under the age of 21. The conductor, George Jennings, was ringing his 25th peal, though only 20. The probate calendar confirms his death date, gives his address at death as 30 Frith Street, Croydon, and shows that his father (described as carpet fitter) was granted administration of his estate, with his effects totalling £171 17s 8d.
