This blog will be looking at the men named on the First World War roll of honour of the Surrey Association of Church Bell Ringers. A more detailed explanation can be found in the first post.

The 24 men who did not survive are also commemorated on the roll of honour of the Central Council for Church Bell Ringers, which is kept at St Paul’s Cathedral. Not all are listed as Surrey Association members or under their Surrey towers. It is also obvious that there were other men who were ringing at towers in the Surrey area were killed but who were not Surrey members.

The blog is written by David Underdown, a current Surrey Association member who rings at St Mary’s Putney. My day job is in the field of digital preservation at The National Archives, Kew, giving me good access to the official British sources on the war. I have spent many lunchtimes and time after work carrying out the research which will be presented in this blog.
